Vinyl and laminate can both give you a realistic wood or stone look for less than the real thing. The best choice depends on where the floor is going.
Laminate
Laminate has a wood-based core with a printed, hard-wearing top layer. It feels solid underfoot and suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. Check the AC rating: AC4 and above is suitable for busy areas of the home.
Vinyl
Vinyl, including click-fit luxury vinyl, is water resistant, which makes it a good fit for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. It is also slightly softer and warmer underfoot.
Quick comparison
- Wet areas: vinyl is usually the safer choice.
- Feel underfoot: laminate feels more like real wood.
- Fitting: both are available as click systems for straightforward DIY fitting.
